Required Staffing Data

To assess the teacher deficit in JSS, the TSC has requested detailed reports in an Excel template covering the following:

– Total student enrollment in Grades 7, 8, and 9

– Gender distribution of students

– Number of teachers currently employed

– Subject combinations of existing teachers

– Gender distribution of teachers

This data will guide TSC in effectively balancing staff allocations, particularly in addressing the acute shortage of science teachers , which has been a persistent challenge in many schools.

The Replacement Process

The advertisement for the replacement of intern teachers will be released immediately after the employment process for exiting interns is completed. In this new recruitment phase, TSC has declared several permanent and pensionable (PnP) vacancies, including:

– 5,862 positions for primary school teachers

– 21 positions for junior secondary school teachers

– 2,824 positions for secondary school teachers

This mass recruitment aims to stabilize the teaching workforce, ensuring continuity in JSS learning programs.

Transition of JSS Intern Teachers to Secondary Schools

The JSS intern teachers who secured permanent jobs in secondary schools were granted an additional 50 marks in the recruitment process, rewarding them for their internship experience. This move by TSC underscores the importance of internship programs in shaping future career opportunities for teachers.

Internship Recognition in Recruitment

Despite having worked for only two months, the 20,000 JSS intern teachers benefited from TSC’s decision to prioritize experienced candidates. Those who successfully passed the vetting process have already:

– Completed employment forms

– Met with secondary school principals and recruitment panels

– Undergone verification of academic and professional documents

Their official posting letters will be issued once final verification is completed at TSC headquarters.

The Vetting Process and Selection Criteria

The vetting and document verification exercise commenced on February 17, 2025, and is set to conclude by February 28, 2025. This step is crucial in ensuring that only qualified candidates transition into permanent teaching roles.

Reasons for Increased Interest in Secondary Schools

Many JSS intern teachers opted to transition to secondary schools due to:

1. Heavy workloads in JSS institutions

2. Unclear career growth pathways for JSS educators

3. Inadequate infrastructure and resources in JSS schools

4. Low motivation levels among JSS staff

As a result, there was a surge in applications from JSS teachers seeking better employment conditions in secondary institutions.

Priority Criteria for Recruitment

During the vetting process, priority was given to teachers based on their geographical location, following this order:

1. Teachers from the same sub-county

2. Teachers from the county

3. Teachers from the region

4. Teachers from other counties

This localized recruitment strategy ensures that schools benefit from educators familiar with their specific educational environments.

Following verification, TSC’s Sub-County Directors will compile Merit Lists of all successful applicants. These lists will be publicly accessible upon request, ensuring transparency in the recruitment process while adhering to the Data Protection Act, 2019.

Conclusion

With the expansion of permanent job opportunities, TSC continues to strengthen the education sector by prioritizing experienced and qualified teachers.
